What’s a Hypnotherapy Session Like? 2017-04-20T17:41:40+00:00

Firstly, you won’t see a person with a long robe holding a crystal ball. And you won’t be asked to “look at a watch swing back and forth.”  This technique can be used; but isn’t.

What you can expect is to meet with a caring professional, trained to work on your problem. In your first appointment,  paperwork (which you will have filled out prior to the session) is discussed, along with the issue to be addressed. The hypnotherapist will explain hypnosis and how it works in relation to your particular need. Prior to hypnosis, you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. The hypnotic technique is performed as you sit in a comfortable recliner. Progressive Relaxation (suggestions of relaxation given to you by the hypnotherapist) will help you become more comfortable. As you continue to relax, your mind becomes open to healthy and healing information imparted to you by the hypnotherapist. You are in control at all times. You are not asleep. In fact you actually have a sense of heightened awareness.

Throughout the session, monitoring is done to track how you are responding hypnotically. At the appropriate time, you are given suggestions directly related to your problem, and specific techniques may be used (such as desensitization or neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), to enhance your session.

While in hypnosis, you are totally aware of your surroundings. You may speak if you choose to, or if asked a question. However, the hypnotherapist usually does most of the talking.  Again, you are in control at all times. If you have an itch, you can scratch it. If you have a tickle in your throat, you are able to cough.

As the session comes to a close, and you’re brought out of the hypnotic state, you once again have an opportunity to ask questions. Afterward, a plan for continued success is discussed, and supporting homework may be assigned.

The initial session is an hour and a half.
