What’s a Hypnotherapy Session Like?

First, you won’t see a person with a long robe holding a crystal ball. And you won’t be asked to “look at a watch swing back and forth”. This technique can be used, however, it isn’t.

What you can expect is meeting someone who will be professional and caring, and is trained to work on your problem. Your paperwork (which you will have filled out prior to the session) is discussed, as well as the issue you want to be addressed. The hypnotherapist will explain hypnosis and how it works in relation to your particular issue. Prior to hypnosis, you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. The hypnotic technique is performed as you sit in a comfortable recliner. Progressive Relaxation (suggestions of relaxation given to you by the hypnotherapist) will help you become more comfortable. As you continue to relax, you become suggestible to healthy information imparted to you by the hypnotherapist. You are in control at all times. You are not asleep. In fact you actually have a sense of heightened awareness.

Some testing is done (not pass or fail). It is simply to see how you are responding hypnotically. When the hypnotherapist believes the time is appropriate, you are given suggestions directly related to your problem. Sometimes techniques of desensitization are used, as well as neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). However, there are numerous other techniques that the hypnotherapist may use to enhance your session.

While in hypnosis, you are totally aware of your surroundings. You may speak if you choose to, or if asked a question. However, the hypnotherapist usually does most of the talking. Let me reinforce, you are in control at all times. You don’t bark like a dog or quack like a duck. If you have an itch, you can scratch it. If you have a tickle in your throat, you can cough.

As the session comes to a close, and you’re brought out of the hypnotic state, you once again have an opportunity to ask questions. Most often a plan for continued success is discussed. Upon leaving, you may be given a homework assignment which you will mail back or return, on the next scheduled session. The initial session is an hour and a half.
